About The Work
For CHART in Tivoli 2023, Hanne Tyrmi has created a remarkable new installation: an iron table without a traditional table top, but from inside of which lush crops grow outwards. The plants included in the installation have all been sourced from local farmers, and reflect the specific species that are most commonly grown for food production in most human diets.
The table is an object that we use everyday and is often a focal point for socialising as well as labour. Instead of fulfilling its typical function as a platform for objects, Tyrmi’s table becomes a fertile ground for new life.

About The Artist
Hanne Tyrmi (b. 1954; NO) has always expressed herself using different materials. Within the artist’s practice, hand and mind are in constant dialogue. By manipulating materials such as lead, steel, bronze, felt and cardboard, Tyrmi conveys basic human experiences and gives them a physical and tactile form. The artist wants to explore the vulnerability that characterises both society and the individual, as well as the experience of barriers and loss, power and powerlessness. Ideas of the body – especially as they relate to social and political realities – as of central importance to Tyrmi’s practice.
Hanne Tyrmi is presented by VAN ETTEN.
