Curated Presentations by 36 Leading Nordic Galleries

During CHART 2024, we were delighted to welcome 22.000 visitors to Charlottenborg to celebrate the best of Nordic contemporary art. From 29 August – 01 September, artists, galleries, publishers, collectors, arts professionals, and institutional representatives came together in Copenhagen to experience an art fair, Book & Print fair, full public programme and off-site exhibition: CHART in Tivoli.

This year's CHART was marked by strong sales, record-breaking Nordic press coverage, growing international museum presence and a particularly high turnout from corporate and municipal art collections across Scandinavia.

This year's CHART highlighted New Voices in the Nordics, focusing on the individuals and ideas whose impact is growing within the Nordic art scene today, alongside the established artists, galleries and institutions whose work has shaped the dialogue around art in recent decades. CHART 2024 also marked the 10th anniversary of CHART Architecture and the start of new long-term commitments to improving sustainability in the art sector, as part of our collaboration with Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC).

Key Initiatives for CHART 2024

This year's focus on New Voices in the Nordics was reflected in art fair presentations and a curated public programme that highlighted groundbreaking artists and the galleries, institutions and collectors who are taking new approaches. A series of interviews, published via the CHART Journal, between writers, curators and emerging artists explored this theme in detail, whilst several artists exhibiting at the fair also participated in live conversations as part of this year's Talks Programme.

CHART 2024 marked the 10th anniversary of CHART Architecture, our annual open-call competition inviting emerging architects to submit proposals for innovative structures to be installed in the courtyards during CHART. The winning proposal Breeze was selected to realise their proposal for an exhibition structure to host Start Collecting with CHART. This curated exhibition featuring contributions by each of the galleries exhibiting at the art fair presented works priced below 20.000 DKK, with the aim to build transparency and encourage first-time buyers to start their collecting journey.

Sustainability
has become an area of increasing focus in recent years and 2024 marked the first edition of the fair since CHART became an Active Member of the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC). As part of our co-comittment towards GCC's art fair initiative, CHART 2024 placed a particular emphasis on consolidating transport, reducing packaging and waste and highlighting the need for positive change, in dialogue with the galleries and our partners.

Talks Programme

The Talks Programme at CHART 2024 featured a range of inspiring panel discussions with experts from different fields. Conversations focused on the important issues shaping our cultural debates today and highlighted topics such as the role of AI, art-science collaborations, and advice for aspiring art collectors.

We would like to thank our Key Partner UBS with whom we co-hosted the panel discussion Collecting Works: Art philanthropy between passion and purpose, exploring different approaches to responsible and strategic philanthropy.

Alongside panel discussions, this year’s Talks Programme also featured a range of one-on-one conversations between leading international curators and artists exhibiting at CHART including: Pia Ferm, Trine Søndergaard, Nina Beier, Johannes Sivertsen & Modou Dieng Yacine, Inuuteq Storch, Teo Ala-Ruona and Marcus Leslie Singleton.

Be sure to tune into the CHART Talks podcast in the coming months where we will be releasing recordings from each of the talks, to listen back to.

"Since 2012, the Scandinavian art world has been meeting in Copenhagen in the late summer. CHART is a fair that provides a special form for galleries from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and of course, Denmark."

CHART Architecture

CHART 2024 marked the 10th anniversary of CHART Architecture. To celebrate the jubilee, this year’s competition called for proposals for one large-scale exhibition structure, imagined as an irresistible space for contemporary art that would challenge the white cube gallery format. The theme for CHART Architecture 2024 was Neo Nordic Architecture and aimed to reconsider the qualities that make Nordic Architecture unique in a global context.

Breeze
was selected as the winner of this year’s competition and the team behind the project (Emil Dupuis Bernild, Mikkel Harboe Wolff, Jonas Sarantaris and Shwan Soran Ali) were invited to realise their proposal. Built using local natural materials and standardised elements, Breeze sat in the courtyard as an extension to the public space. Made with the sails from Danish ships, the pavilion’s roof allowed daylight to illuminate the artworks inside, whilst also protecting them against the elements.

Thank you to this year’s competition jury: Søren Pihlmann, Tyra Dokkedahl and Jakob Brandtberg Knudsen.

Book & Print Fair

For CHART 2024, our annual book fair returned to Festsalen with a new identity as the CHART Book & Print Fair, and a newly expanded focus on limited edition prints. 25 independent publishers from across the Nordics participated with stand-out presentations showcasing the craftsmanship of artist book and limited edition print publishing in the region today.

Adjacent to the Book & Print Fair, Københavns Møbelsnedkeri and Plethora Magazine produced a unique installation for CHART 2024. Titled ‘The Deep Reading Garden,’ this space combined a curated display of printed matter with peaceful surroundings, designed to inspire calmness and heighten the senses. Produced sustainably using local materials, the Deep Reading Garden channeled the principles of Ikebana to create an environment rich in flora, natural scents, raw wood and other pleasing textures.

Throughout the days of CHART, The Deep Reading Garden hosted a variety of special events including readings, discussions, moderated talks and more.
