About the work

Sko and Vækst are two sculptures by Morten Buch, carved from blocks of foam and cast in colored Jesmonite and patinated bronze, respectively. The motifs are typical of Buch, who repeatedly uses symbols such as the flower and the high-heeled shoe, representing the meeting between nature and culture, or culturally shaped gender identity.

Vækst
(2018) is a sculpture by Morten Buch, the figure is carved from a block of foam, then cast in bronze and patinated. The motif is typical of Buch, who has repeatedly used the cut flower, often in a vase, as a symbol of the meeting between nature and culture. The use of soft foam, cast in hard bronze, places the sculpture in a curious space between the pop-cultural and something almost geological.

Sko
(2018) is a sculpture by Morten Buch, the figure is carved from a block of foam and cast in colored Jesmonite. The motif is typical of Buch, who has often used the high-heeled shoe as a symbol of culturally shaped gender identity. The perforated surface and rough cuts that form the figure create a stark contrast to the femininity and sexuality of the motif.

About the artist

The Danish artist Morten Buch (b. 1970) primarily works with painting but has intensified his focus on sculpture over the past 10 years. Buch envisions his still lifes as fusions of forms: for this reason, he has worked with a wide range of media, from drawing to painting, and sculpture, always with an experimental approach and viewing the different expressions as transitional moments from one to another. Sometimes, paintings serve as ideas from which sculptures can emerge, while at other times, sculptures become the basis for new paintings, and so on, thereby opening up the widest possible experiential horizon for the viewer.

Major solo exhibitions include Horsens Kunstmuseum, Horsens, Denmark (2019); Kastrupgårdsamlingen, Tårnby, Denmark (2018) and Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, Wilhelmshaven, Germany (2007). Among awards Buch received the Niels Wessel Bagges Art Foundation Grant in 2009. The artist is represented in the public collections of Arken Museum of Modern Art, the Danish Art Foundation, Horsens Kunstmuseum, Kastrupgårdsamlingen and The New Carlsberg Foundation in Denmark.

Morten Buch is represented by Galleri Susanne Ottesen.
