Cry Me A River, 2026

For CHART in Tivoli 2026, Danish artist group SUPERFLEX presents 'Cry Me A River' in The Lake.

Reminiscent of the commercial signage frequently found in urban landscapes and generally located on the tops of façades or buildings, Cry Me A River translates the familiar phrase into a text-based installation, consisting of an illuminated signboard made with ocean blue LED letters floating on a raft.

Cry Me A River repurposes the aesthetics of commercial signage to rebrand the end of humanity. The phrase is often used as a sarcastic and unsympathetic comment towards someone complaining. But if we imagine the phrase uttered by Planet Earth towards our complaining about the changes of climate, the gravity of the phrase drastically changes.

While the oceans are rising the irony of a metaphorical running river becomes a lot more serious. Perhaps we can use this setting to reflect about our role and impact on this planet. And, maybe, start acting towards a constructive presence instead of one where we simultaneously complain while we continue the destruction of the same ecosystems we are intrinsically part of.
