Curated for
CHART

For CHART 2026, Avlskarl Galllery brings together four artists presenting entirely new works that expand the language of painting. Friedrich Kunath, born in Eastern Germany and now based in the United States, Sergej Jensen, originally from Denmark/Serbia and working in Berlin, and Behrang Karimi, born in Iran and now based in Germany, each contribute distinct approaches to oil painting shaped by their transnational perspectives. Alongside them, we will present Morten Løbner Espersen's ceramic works with rich glazed surfaces. Together, the presentation explores material, surface, and the expanded field of painting.

Friedrich Kunath (DE)

Friedrich Kunath makes colourful, tragicomic landscapes inspired by German Romanticism and Western popular culture. His works explore themes like love, hope, and loneliness, mixing serious, poetic moods with playful, cartoon-like elements. Small animated figures often appear, bringing moments of unexpected humor into melancholic scenes.

Friedrich Kunath (b. 1974, Germany; lives in the US) graduated from the Braunschweig University of Arts in 1998. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at institutions including Kunstsammlung Jena, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, and KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art, Berlin, and is held in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, and LACMA.

Sergej Jensen (DK)

Sergej Jensen experiments with painting by breaking and reconstructing its traditional rules. He uses textiles, fragments, stitching, bleaching, and unusual surfaces to challenge how painting can look and feel.

Sergej Jensen (b. 1973, Denmark; lives in Germany and the US) studied at Städelschule in Frankfurt and has exhibited at MoMA PS1, New York, and Kunsthalle Portikus, Frankfurt.

Behrang Karimi (IR)

Behrang Karimi creates works that exist between figuration and abstraction. His paintings are frozen moments, exploring memory, history, and literature. They are ambiguous and poetic, bringing together different worlds, personal experiences, and art historical references.

Behrang Karimi (b. 1980, Iran; lives in Germany) studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and has held solo exhibitions at venues including Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Maureen Paley, and TRAMPS, London.

Morten Løbner Espersen (DK)

Morten Løbner Espersen creates beauty from the “nothingness” of clay. He explores its endless possibilities, experimenting with form, glaze, colour, and surface. His signature cylinders can be varied infinitely, representing stability and inner calm. The firing process adds unpredictability, giving each piece a unique presence, where material, form, and colour come together in a dynamic, living expression.

Morten Løbner Espersen (b. 1965, Denmark; lives in Denmark) studied at Denmark’s Design School and École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré, Paris. His work is held in collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, and Designmuseum Danmark.
