CHART Architecture 2024

Celebrating 10 years of innovative architectural projects at Charlottenborg during CHART

An Exhibition Structure Designed To Challenge The White Cube

For the 10th edition of CHART Architecture, we called for proposals for one large-scale exhibition structure that would be installed in the courtyards at Charlottenborg during CHART 2024.

Imagined as an irresistible space for contemporary art, the pavilion would be home to this year's Start Collecting with CHART exhibition and host artworks presented by each of the galleries participating at the art fair. The theme for this year's competition was Neo Nordic Architecture with a particular emphasis on aiming to reconsider the qualities that make Nordic Architecture unique in a global context.

After receiving large numbers of submissions from teams of emerging architects from across Denmark, this year's competition jury selected Breeze as the winning proposal to be realised at Charlottenborg during the final weeks of August.

Thank you to this year’s competition jury: Søren Pihlmann, Tyra Dokkedahl and Jakob Brandtberg Knudsen.

Breeze

Built using local natural materials and standardised elements, Breeze sits in the courtyard as an extension to the public space.

The pavilion’s roof is made with sails from Danish ships, allowing daylight to illuminate the artworks inside, whilst also protecting them against the elements. The connections between the structures allow direct re-use of the wall elements and beams.

Breeze is designed by Emil Dupuis Bernild, Mikkel Harboe Wolff, Jonas Sarantaris & Shwan Soran Ali.

Read more about the design process in the architects' own words as part of an article for Dezeen by Amy Frearson featuring Jonas Sarantaris from the team behind Breeze, and Julie Quottrup Silbermann, Director of CHART. Find the full article HERE.

Breeze is made possible by the generous support of STARK Fonden, Norse Projects, 3V Consulting, JBH-Sailing, Copenhagen Sails, TAGA Farvehandel, Vertigo. Thank you also to the building team at Charlottenborg for your help.
