How did you get into the artworld - what were your previous work experiences?

My interest in art began at an early age. I have shared life with an artist since 1968, which has given me a deeper perspective and understanding of the art world. Having previously worked as a primary school teacher for 30 years, it was an exciting opportunity, when in a recent group exhibition, we collaborated with Professor Gertrud Sandqvist to curate works by a selection of ex- students from Malmö Art College.

I grew up surrounded by art - with an artist father and a gallerist mother - which influenced my own path in the art world. In 2012, I started ANNAELLEGALLERY together with Anna Bohman in Stockholm and later, in 2018, I moved to Skåne and have since worked with Galleri Arnstedt.

Can you tell me about the first artwork you sold - and your first exhibition?

The opening of the gallery with artist Ernst Billgren in 1998 was certainly a memorable, yet challenging experience, marked by the unexpected rainstorm that flooded the buildings and caused considerable damage. The sale of Billgren's small green bronze angel with golden wings perhaps symbolised a promising start despite all the setbacks.

How would you describe your job titles as gallerists? What are your primary responsibilities and to who?

Running a gallery involves a wide range of responsibilities, from practical tasks to engaging with the audience, writing texts, and working with the press. Ensuring that artists feel satisfied and that their work is respectfully presented is a top priority in planning and organising exhibitions.

What makes your gallery stand out/unique?

The gallery is located in Östra Karup at the Bjäre peninsula in Sweden. In an idyllic countryside setting, easily accessible to the public, the gallery offers a unique experience for visitors. 26 years ago, a 400-year-old mill building was converted and extended into a gallery. With several exhibition rooms and a sculpture garden, the gallery provides a varied range of artistic expressions. The peaceful atmosphere means that guests can experience both art and nature in peace and quiet.

How do you balance the commercial aspects of running a gallery with supporting artists’ artistic careers and practices?

Blending well-known artists with emerging talents creates a scene that benefits both. Sales by established artists support them at the beginning of their careers, hence the gallery fosters a creative environment that promotes diversity in the art on display.

What is your advice for someone who wants to start collecting? What are do’s and don’ts of collectors?

There is a difference between someone who wants to build up a collection and someone who wants to invest. It's important to have a clear intention from the start and to trust your instincts in the process.

Building a collection takes time and patience to see the connection and evolution over the years, while investing requires a more strategic approach. Both paths have their own merits and require a different mindset to navigate successfully.

How do you see the relationship between galleries and artists evolving in the future in a more digital art world?

Since the gallery opened 26 years ago, much has changed. In the beginning, there was great interest from both newspapers and TV channels, and mobile phones, as well as the internet, were undeveloped. It is fascinating how the art world has evolved with the advent of technology.

From traditional media convergence to the rise of social media, podcasts, and online platforms, artists and galleries have a greater opportunity to connect with a global audience and shape their careers and businesses in new ways.
