Arnstedt Östra Karup (SE)

The gallery is located in Östra Karup, a village at the Bjäre peninsula in southern part of Sweden. Established in 1998, a 400-year-old mill building was converted and extended into a gallery. The gallery is open from April to November, and its program has always been a mix of well-established Nordic artists and young emerging artists often from Malmö Art Academy. Around the gallery winds a sculpture garden that by itself is worth a visit.

Curated for
CHART

At CHART 2025, Arnstedt Östra Karup will present a collaboration between renowned Swedish artists Peter Frie (b. 1947) and Lars Englund (b. 1933), each with a unique artistic path. Frie will exhibit new paintings, while Englund will showcase one or two of his signature sculptures. Despite their different styles, both artists explore timelessness, where history, present, and future merge. Alongside their works, the gallery will present an installation of smaller pieces from artists regularly shown at Arnstedt Östra Karup, including: Emm Berring, Hanna Zelleke Collin, Linn Fernström, Jarl Ingvarsson, Gabriel Karlsson, Marcus Matt, Samaneh Reyhani and Jakob Simonson. The presentation will blend works by both established and emerging artists, like the gallery's program.

Peter Frie (SE)

Peter Frie works in both painting and sculpture. His sculptures are inspired by his paintings, where trees transform into "three-dimensional artworks." Frie’s trees and landscapes are not tied to any specific place; they exist in a space that is both nowhere and everywhere. Frie’s paintings are rooted in the landscape tradition, especially in their ability to transform landscapes into emotionally charged atmospheres. While his works suggest a strong sense of place, they also carry a metaphorical quality, often blurring the connection to any specific location. Instead of depicting a physical landscape, his paintings convey emotions and highlight the ambiguity of memory, offering a personal experience for each viewer.

Peter Frie (b. 1947, Lysekil; SE) splits his time between Thailand and Båstad, Sweden. His work has been shown at venues like the National Museum Stockholm; Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park; New Art Centre; Roche Court; Salisbury UK and Lunds Cathedral. His art is in collections such as Moderna Museet; Malmö Art Museum; the Fries Museum and Kiasma. In 1998, he received the ARS Fennica Award and The Memory of Prince Eugene Award from the Sundbyholm Art Foundation. In 2024, Frie exhibited as part of CHART in Tivoli.

Lars Englund (SE)

Lars Englund is a renowned Swedish sculptor whose work resists simple categorization. His use of industrial materials and interaction with space recall the minimalist style of the 1960s, while his geometric forms also suggest abstract constructivism. Simultaneously, his organic shapes and architectural experimentation evoke the flowing aesthetics of the Baroque. Though his sculptures are made from industrial materials like rubber, steel, plastic, and aluminum, they feel warm and inviting. Featuring repetitive, undulating circular elements, they combine strict symmetry with an organic, sensual quality. The interplay between internal and external spaces deepens the viewer’s engagement with the work.

Lars Englund (b. 1933, Stockholm; SE) is based in Jonstorp, Sweden. He gained significant recognition with a major retrospective at Moderna Museet in 2005. His international acclaim includes exhibitions at P.S.1 in New York; the Guggenheim Museum; the American-Scandinavian Foundation: the Centre Culturel Suédois in Paris, and the 1978 Venice Biennale. In 2023, he had another retrospective at Moderna Museet in Malmö.
