CHART 2019

30 Aug – 1 Sep 2019

Kunsthal Charlottenborg & Den Frie

The seventh edition of CHART took place in Copenhagen from 29 August - 1 September 2019.

CHART consisted of a contemporary art fair presenting the leading galleries in the Nordic art scene at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg. At a second historic arts venue, Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Arts, the dedicated section CHART Design took place, showing the most prominent galleries and design studios in the region.

Alongside this was a number of curated exhibitions and a vast public programme of talks, film screenings, concerts and performance, which were free and open to all.

24,500 guests attended, nearly 40% of whom were international visitors travelling from 35 different countries to experience and discover 46 exhibitors and 195 artists and designers who participated in the entire programme.

Over 3 days artists, designers, creatives, arts professionals, emerging talents, established institutions and art lovers from near and far gathered together to celebrate artistic practice.

Talent and Curated Exhibitions

Emerging is a group exhibition of young artists who have studied at a Nordic art academy and recently put forth a distinct position within the artistic landscape. Entitled 'The Gatherer, The Dumpsterdiver, The Raver, The Hunter, The Alien and The Witch', the five artists exhibited in 2019 were informed by a general theme of working with the intimate as a starting point for artistic expression, focusing on the material tactility of the near and personal.

In 2019, CHART's Curio design exhibition showcasing young Nordic designers was created in collaboration with Designmuseum Danmark. Five designers who work innovatively with the materiality of design were chosen to exhibit work in the vitrines in front of Designmuseum Danmark. The exhibition, 'Matters - Rethinking Materials', explored questions concerning material use and value in the contemporary field of design.

Architecture is an open 72-hour competition inviting postgraduate students or newly graduated architects, designers and artists working in the Nordic region to explore and challenge the crossovers between art, design and architecture through realising temporary pavilions for CHART. Five teams presented innovative, artistic approaches to how architecture, through rethinking materials and craft, can pave the way for a more sustainable future.

'All and Everything' presented, side by side for the first time, two pieces by Portuguese artist Alexandre Estrela: 'Solar Watch' and 'The Golden Record (All and Everything)'. As a prelude Estrela’s exhibition at Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, CHART, Museo Tamayo and Den Frie collaborated to present never before seen artworks by Estrela in Copenhagen.

Window shopper presented works by artists who all engage fashion as part of their artistic practice. In the week leading up to CHART 2019, the exhibition took place in some of the most characteristic fashion stores across Copenhagen exploring the mutual fascination and admiration between art and fashion.
