SKUM by BIG
Today, the second CHART SOCIAL satellite event opens. The pavilion SKUM was created by BIG Bjarke Ingels Group and is inflatable in 7 minutes. It is made from the same material used for bouncy castles and encourages playfully interaction and dialogue between the visitors. The pavilion premiers at Roskilde Festival as Tuborg Bar before it travels to CHART ART FAIR at Kunsthal Charlottenborg and then to ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Aarhus as part of their European Culture Capital programme in 2017.
BIG was tasked to create a mobile structure, which could function as a social framework and easily be moved from Roskilde to CHART and finally to ARoS. The ambition was to create a social space ready for “plug in and play”. The result is a bubble-like cloud made of inflatable material, illuminated by LED lights and blown up in only 7 minutes.
“The idea of using a bouncy castle as material came about because one can create any kind of structure with the material. It is inflatable and easy to pack down and inflate again, but it has been much harder to produce than we thought. The manufacturer gave almost up and we were under a massive time pressure, but the result is the most beautiful you can imagine, ” says Jakob Lange, partner at BIG.
“Every year Tuborg creates a breathing space during Roskilde Festival, where our visitors can relax. But SKUM is more than just a bar. I would call it a dream that has come true because of Bjarke Ingels Group. We think everyone should see this sculpture, like Tuborg is all of Denmark’s beer. Therefore, we joined forces with CHART ART FAIR, which we already have established a collaboration with for the fair’s opening concert on Friday 26 August. It was also CHART who established the cooperation with ARoS, and we are very proud that SKUM will end up in Aarhus when Aarhus’s will be cultural capital in 2017,” said chief sponsor Peter Giacomello.
Bjarke Ingels, architect and founder of BIG Bjarke Ingels Group, is one of Denmark’s most prominent and influential architect. ARoS Aarhus Art Museum is one of Europe’s largest art museums situated in the heart of Aarhus, Denmark.
SKUM could be realised thanks to BIG Bjarke Ingels Group, Tuborg Musik, ARoS and àrea cúbica.
